What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of your eye's natural lens that gradually impairs vision. It often develops with age but can also be caused by genetics, eye trauma, or medical conditions like diabetes.
What are the symptoms of cataracts?
Symptoms of cataracts can include blurry vision, glare, difficulty seeing far or near, or halos around lights especially at night.
Fortunately, cataracts are highly treatable with outpatient surgery — and the results can be life-changing.

My surgery has been scheduled. What can I expect the morning of cataract surgery?
- Once your eye doctor has determined that you have cataracts and has recommended surgery, you will undergo preoperative testing followed by scheduling two surgical dates. One eye is schedule first, while the other eye is typically scheduled 1-2 weeks later. Nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to surgery. It is a routine procedure and is done under local anesthesia with IV sedation or "twilight." Some people sleep through the procedure however it is not general anesthesia. It is not painful. The procedure is generally 10 minutes but expect to be in the surgery center approximately 1.5-2 hours. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure is completed. There are minimal limitations following cataract surgery, no swimming, or jacuzzi, and no heavy lifting for 1 week. You can shower at the 48 hour mark. Some people return to driving and even work the next day.
- You will use a series of post-operative medications in drop form for one month in each eye that has surgery. The eye drop regimen typically consists of;
Antibiotic - Ofloxacin 0.3% four times daily for one week
Steroid – Prednisolone 1% four times daily for two weeks, then two times daily for two weeks.
Once the above regimens are complete you will no longer need drops.
Lastly, cataracts can never come back. It is a one time fix for life!
